本课程通过对八部意大利经典电影的分析，探讨电影的表达方式与技巧，以及电影与二战后意大利社会文化的关系。鉴于意大利电影在战后西方的巨大影响，本课程对理解当代西方的文化与思想有很大帮助。
课程所选八部电影，始于四零五零年代的“新现实主义”运动，终于2010年的现实主义新作，以意大利“现实”与“现实主义”方法论为参照系，探讨意大利电影对“现实”的描述、反思、突破与回归。课程全程采用小组讨论，在第四与第七次课后学员需提交一份个人感想。
The course is a close reading of eight major Italian films, organized in chronological order. It employs the traditional method of close reading. Apart from in-depth analysis of plot and character, it also touches on themes such as fascism, neorealism, sexual violence and psychoanalysis. Inspired by my Yale mentors Giuseppe Mazzotta and Millicent Marcus, I aim to “let the film speak for itself”, with minimum involvement of historicism or critical theory.
